Background
Each year Jardine Matheson recruit a cohort of young trainee managers, the Jardine Executive Trainees (JETs), with the expectation that they will become managers within the next three years. This group is selected from the most able graduates of some of the most highly regarded universities globally.
MTP were approached to explore whether we could develop a more holistic development programme for this group, compared to the approach that had previously been adopted.
Our brief was to design and deliver a tailored programme that was challenging to both those who had relevant business degrees and those who had studied non-business subjects at university, and to be able to deliver material which was engaging to participants of the highest intellectual level.
We ran the first programme for those recruited in 2018 and have now begun working with the 2019 and 2020 intakes. The new programme was also offered to, and attended by, those previously recruited in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Objective
The objective was to provide a rounded business education for participants recruited as Executive Trainees, so that they will be able to take on managerial responsibility early in their careers and progress quickly.
What we delivered
We delivered a blended programme of face-to-face modules and virtual classroom sessions covering the core areas of Business Education. The main topics covered were Business Strategy, Finance, Marketing and Operations Management.
The learning methods include lecture/discussions, case studies and business challenges based on live issues being addressed within the operating companies of the Jardine group.
Senior managers of the company were involved in the design and delivery of the programme including the business challenges.
Other learning methods used included business simulations, and an exploration of participant’s differing approaches to Creativity
